Exploding double glazing

Hi,

We have a lean to coservatory built about 15 years ago(with a 5 year guarantee). Last night one of the internal roof panels (10ft X 3ft) shattered and fell onto the floor!
It was quite shocking to see this amount of slass fall on an area where our 4 year old regularly plays. I called the supplier/fitter and was fobbed off with the name of a repair company. They said the rest of the panels probably wont shatter! Not good enough for me! Does anyone know where i could go from here?? Do i have any rights regarding the structural stability of the glass??

Any help much appreciated..

Thanks

K

How do you know that it "exploded" and that something else did not cause the breakage?

Hi,
I don't know if it 'exploded', but it sounded like it did. It certainly shatterd and fell to the floor. It was the internal glazing panel of the double glazing roof unit. i would assume that this could not have been caused by an external source. One year ago an external door panel aslo shattered and we were told it was probably something like a stone etc. I am starting to wonder that there may be a fault with the glass. i was thinking maybe to get someone like eolas to check it out. Has anybody had experience with this?

thanks,

K

the structure could be flexing due to wind or sth ie not the fault of the glass. you could maybe apply clear or slightly tinted (boy racer) plastic film to the inside of the glass which should keep it together if it was to happen again.

When getting the glass replaced, try to get laminated glass installed if possible. Laminated glass will crack and perhaps shatter, but it will remain in place. Also, laminated glass prevents fading of furniture, etc. by the sun (or so they say).

Thanks for that. I called a glass specialist who is going to come out and have a look. He suggested it could be a number of things. Including structural movement as already suggested, or a badly fitted screm under the edge of the panel. Also (encase it happens to someone else) he said the glass was toughened, similar to the side window of a car. If it were to shatter and fall on you, your injuries would be realativly minor compared to ordinary glass. Thank you for your help and advice, he's due next week. I will keep you informed of the outcome.

K.
