Expired NCT - Validity of New Cert

I bought a runaround for my wife last week , An 01 Primera , needed a bit of work done which I as seeing to at the moment. This car had been laid-up for some time and the last NCT on it expired in March 07.
I have now booked it in for its NCT early next month and am wondering how long the new cert (assuming it passes) will be valid for? I have been told that I could be liable for arrears even though I have only taken ownership , is trhis right?
 
No you won't be liable for arrears - take your reg cert along with you.

I got stopped for no NCT last October (previous one had expired in June 2004). Got my NCT done within the 10 days the Garda allowed me and new cert is valid till June 2010.
