Excel insists on using Internet Explorer

I have FireFox set as my default browser in Set Program Access and Defaults and, as a result, in most cases anything that uses a browser uses FireFox rather than the default Internet Explorer. Except Excel - if I have URL links in cells and click on them Excel insists on launching IE. I have checked the Excel options and can't find anything to control this even though the "master" Set Program Access and Defaults option should take effect globally. Anybody know how to stop Excel doing this?

'Fraid not, and I've asked a colleague who, ehrm, excels in Excel.

Bear in mind that both apps are from the same stable, so to speak...

I've tried this on my PC and I found that Firefox (my default browser) is launched when I click on an URL link in Excel.

I am afraid that I don't why this works for me but not for ClubMan but if it possible for one person to do it, then it should be possible people in general to do it.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Still no joy - on both my personal laptop and my work PC Excel insists on launching IE rather the my default browser FireFox. What a pain...

can you not set xls files to open firefox from folder options in control panel?

You mean associate the .XLS file extension with FireFox? That wouldn't be much use in this context. Or do you mean something else?

Look at File type associations in the options menu in Windows Explorer for URLs' and HTML.
Probably set to IE.

No - HTML files are associated with FireFox and are irrelevant here anyway. URLs are associated with the Shell Doc Object and Control Library which should use the correct API to invoke the default browser configured in Set Program Access and Defaults.

works ok for me once I save the spreadsheet.

click the link in excel and HOLD the mouse down for 5 secs.

the cursor changes after a few seconds

release the mouse button , now what ??????

I am using excel 2007

They should indeed use the correct API. However this seems to be a recurring issue for people with no common cause visible and as there is no official fix people are recommending that you try to unset and reset Firefox as your default browser or update your file associations. If it is a registry issue then this is not going to help but no harm in trying.

The following discussion and suggested fix might help.

Hmm, maybe an office update will fix it .

Firefix launches fine for me after the cursor in the ss , clicked on the url in the cell, goes to cross (like you) and I release the left hand mouse button

Thanks for those links if only to reassure me that I'm not alone!
