Estimates for painting doors & skirting?

My house has pine (red deal i think) doors skirting etc.
These were never varnished, and I'd like to paint them cream/white but don't have the heart to start the job, I know it would take me weeks doing a couple of hours an evening. Most of these jobs I'd do myself, but this just seems too much for me.

Could anyone give a rough idea how much it might cost to get this done?

I have 9 interior doors, and skirting in 3 bedrooms, kitchen, living, and hall/stairs/landing.
 
I can only guess at to the sizes of the doors and how much skirting is involved and how much preparation is involved.

Fully prepped and painted with 3 coats of paint 5 days @ €200 plus about €200 for paint and materials.

€1200 plus vat would be in the reasonable range.
 
I think like in most scenarios where you are looking for guide prices, the best course of action is to get on the phone & solicit a # of quotes. Given the direction the construction business has taken, I'd hope to be able to secure a painter for less than a grand a week.

I don't earn a grand a week myself.

So (apologies in advance to S.L.F.) I'm not that bad at painting. I might take it a room at a time or something.
 
Yes, do it yourself in stages Mel - not so daunting once you get started. Just turn up the music and away you go!
 
red deal doors are the worst doors for painting as they are not the best wood quality. i can guarantee once you have finished them in a few weeks they will crack along the joints and panels it looks terrible after a while and the knots will start comming through after a couple of months.these doors are more suitable for varnishing you could paint the frames and skirtings and varnish or stain the doors.i do it alot..
 

This would be allowed for by a good painter!

I'm only guessing as to what wood the doors are made of, I didn't put them in myself.
I know about sealing the knots; What would a good painter do preparation-wise to prevent cracks?

No need to be sorry, you have done nothing to offend me in any way.

The preparation for cracks I imagine is to use a flexible filler like painters mate.

I'm not a painter myself but do know what needs doing.

Hope it all works out for you.
 
i know this s.l.f. .i was only giving her a few pointers as she was thinking of doing it herself.i think.

I would get the impression you are just looking for work.

I don't believe doors crack along the joints, I don't believe new doors nowadays have many knots as they are engineered with a veneered layer on the out side which would stop any knots from comming through.

To the OP if you do a search of AAM you'll find plenty of advice about how to paint and prepare to paint, ie if you should so need it of course.
 
crikey slf, you would put off anyone trying too give some one a piece of advice,in her original post she states red deal doors unvarnished.so no veneered layer.red deal doors are cheap its other doors like oak and the like that have a veneered layer too make them look solid.lets not make a big deel out of this.

I have not seen any new solid pine doors in a long time.

they are all engineered pine, usually poplar, usually there is a thin skin of about 2mm on the surface to hide the engineered look.

Advice can be both good and bad since this is a public forum anybody can give advice not just people who know what they are talking about...
 
Mel. I painted my skirtings today. 3 rooms, took me about 2 hours to mask and fill in the cracks in 3 rooms and then another 4 hours to paint. Had the radio on, the baby was with my mum so I actually enjoyed it, was nice to have some peace and quiet and time to think (for once!)
Its not that bad a job so maybe you could do it a day at a time. Now doors is probably a whole different ball game but if you get the skirtings done yourself then at least it saves you cash to get the doors done. My painter is charging me 400 to do 6 doors.. I will supply the paint.

Are these doors to be painted from scratch or have they been painted before?

If they have been painted before €400 would be an ok price if they have not been painted before you have a steal of a price.

My friend got a 'painter/cowboy/chancer' to paint some doors the shister never bothered to key the surface before he slopped the paint on, a few months later the paint was coming off again.
 
They have not been painted before, the guy has just done the rest of my house and his work is impeccable. He is definitely not a "cowboy or a chancer" as he is a bit of a perfectionist and has done an iamazing job on my house. Judging by some of the quotes other people are getting (on this site) there is a lot of painters charging obscene prices, guess I just got a decent one!

2 months later...his paint is flaking off

However I'm glad you have a good painter and that you are happy with him.

In fairness since he is probably still working on other things in the house its not a big deal for him to do a bit extra in his day.

If he got a call to do 6 doors from scratch and there was nothing else for him to do then it would not be as lucrative for him and he would charge more than €400 for 6 doors because it would take 3 days for him to do the job.

Regarding obscene prices......until you can walk into any of the posters houses and see what the job involves it is wrong for anyone to cast judgment on what people charge for their work.
 
My painter has finished the other jobs in the house and he is calling back to do the doors, it will take him 2 days. He did my sisters house and my mums 2 years ago and there has been no flaking off. S.L.F you should take your own advice and not cast any judgement on what people charge for their work.
 

Perhaps you would like to point out where I cast doubts on your painter or what he charges!
