ESB meter not turning

The meter on my house (which I'm in a few months) doesn't appear to be turning and my bills are reflecting this (0 units used). There are no magnets attached to the meter!

Hands up who would report this? I suppose a written letter to ESB customer supply is the way forward :( I had a significant wait waiting for the supply to be reconnected to the house - I wonder if they'll be as slow to fix this ;)

I reckon when they realise mistake they will estimate your previous usage and bill you for it - who reads the meter?? I'd just be worried that I'd get hit with a big bill in a few months time.

They can try but I've no previous usage as it hasn't turned since I've been in the house. I can't see how they could estimate accuratly my usage. Will see what they say

Free electrity! Can I come and live round yours then? Mine came the other day and it wasn't pretty!

Seriously though as ney001 said, you don't won't to get lumbered with a big bill in a couple of months, you might get someone nice on the phone/or someone that doesn't want the hassle, that will just start it as of when it's fixed.

I shall put my ESB hat on here. :)

When they do discover what is going on they will install a new meter and then read it 2 months or so later and then they shall go back and estimate your back useage on the basis of that 2 months use.

How would they know whether the house was occupied or not?? If the OP rang them and said he/she had just moved in and noticed the fault...who can say otherwise?? Not that I'm advocating this by the way!

you could aways put the money away yourself and let them find out their own error, if you put away about 75 for two months depening on your actual usage, its not as if you dont intend paying them just waiting for them to correct their own errors.

Well, sadly for the op, it is an offence to take electricity without paying for it. If they have received bills with 0 units and know they are using electricity they can hardly argue they didnt know. So really you are better off just getting it sorted with the ESB. Although legally they have to pay for the electricity already consumed they should try to get some good will from the local office and try to cut a deal.

my advise is to get an electrician friend of yours to reconnect the meter. a registered spark will not work on the ESB side of the supply. the computerised ESB Billing system will then start billing you for units it will be the end of your free Electricity but maybe you will avoid the previous bills.
Bleed ignorance if they contact you they are the experts not you.
I dont condone this behaviour but at the prices the ESB are charging a an experimental game like this won't hurt them.
