Erosion threatens house - what are the options?

Hi all,
We have a family home in a fantastic location overlooking a wide river with the mountains in the background.
The problem is that there is about a 60ft cliff down to the river and the cliff is being eroded and is now only about 20ft from the house. (Those are rough estimates)
Can anyone tell me what our options are?
Is the council required to assist in any way by shoring up the cliff?
Can house insurance be used in some way?
Is the house saleable to council or anyone else?

Any advice appreciated.
 
If you already have insurance, read the policy carefully and consult your broker. if you havent, I would think that it is too late to take one out.
