Epson Printer S20 wont recognise generic cartridges

I'm after buying 4 black generic replacement cartridges, and only twice it printed from the first cartridge I fitted. It keeps saying there is no ink and do I want to order some.

I keep removing and replacing the cartridge and that's the only way I got it to print (twice) its a right pain.

Am I stuck with buying only Epson cartridges
