Hi all just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this situation.
My sister is a single parent and has always worked and never received any sort of benefit other than childrens allowance. it seems now that she may be unemployed by the end of the week and she doesnt know where to start! She has a mortgage, substantial credit union loan and credit card debt. She also receives no maintenance from her childs father and will never receive it unfortunatley. Where should she go from here??? Ive advised her to seek advices from MABS but thats all know, what is she entitled to??
Thanks in advance.

If your sister is available for, and seeking fulltime work, then she can sign for Jobseeker's. If she has sufficient PRSI contributions, she will probably qualify for Jobseeker's Benefit, which isn't means-tested.

In addition, she can make a claim for One Parent Family Payment, which is means tested. If OPFP is granted, she will be entitled to half of her Jobseeker's Benefit until her entitlement to JB runs out.

Both JB and OPFP are claimed from the local SW office.

She may be entitled to assistance towards the mortgage, application forms and information are available on the SW website (www.welfare.ie) these are dealt with by the Community Welfare Officer at the local HSE health centre.

You've already steered her towards MABS to discuss her other debts which is a good plan.

Thanks a million gipimann, at least I can help steer her in the right direction now.
Much appreciated!
