Engine Warranty by Manufacturer

I was once told by an Opel dealer that the OPEL engines have 10 year Warranty.... I asked what does he mean? He said if the engine breaks down within 10 years, Opel will take some liability for its repair/replacement or a portion of cost of repair/ replacement.

Since this dealer is not in business any more, I cant contact him.
But my friend has a 2006 Opel Meriva 1.4L whose engine has packed up.
Where does he stand? Any Irish or EU legislation in this respect.

I don't think that whatever an Opel dealer told you is very relevant.

The only thing relevant here is what your friend got when he bought the car.
Did he buy the car new?
Why does he not go back to the dealer he bought the car from?

I think it's highly unlikely that Opel gave a 10 year warranty. Here are the [broken link removed]. You will see that their normal warranty is 2 years which can be extended to 4.

4 Year Warranty Terms & Conditions
In addition to Opel’s two year warranty, vehicles supplied by General Motors Ireland Limited (Opel Importers in Ireland) and sold and registered in Ireland by an OPEL dealer, will benefit from an additional two years of
warranty.

This Warranty cover expires on the fourth anniversary of the vehicle’s registration date or when the vehicle reaches 100,000kms, whichever occurs sooner.

Warranty cover is subject to the vehicle being serviced and maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and use of the correct grade of engine oil. Service dates and mileage must be recorded by
stamping the accompanying service booklet. Services must be carried out by VAT registered and approved service dealers.

The additional two year warranty excludes the replacement of parts due to normal wear and tear linked to the use of the vehicle, its mileage or its geographic and climatic environment.
