Hi Folks,

I am going to San francisco next week. I am thinking of getting a ring (engagement!) for my girlfriend. Can anybody recommend a good place to go ?

Thanks,
Darragh.

P.s. I have heard there are good deals in New York, I am presuming the same goes for San Francisco.

I can't give you specific advise about San Francisco, but recount my experience in Clearwater in July.

I visited Gordon's Jewellers during their sale (they are a nationwide chain). I bought a five stone diamond half hoop ring which was $1430 - discounted to $994. This exchanged to €836.

I have to say I was nervous in spending this amount of money - but I had had an accident while on holiday and wasn't able to spend money on anything else (fell and hurt my back). It came near time to go home and I dragged myself to a shopping mall for some therapy and ended up in the jewellers.

Lots of people admired the ring when I came home - so out of curiosity I had it valued.

First thing the jeweller said to me when I went back was "this is an American ring". My heart dropped. I asked how he knew and he said the settings are different to European. However, once that shock had passed he continued to tell me that the diamonds were of a good quality and he valued the ring at - wait for it €3,800. I nearly fell over!

This is my experience, it has been good - and if I find myself in the States again (with money to spend) I would definitely visit Gordons again.

go to Tiffany's they are in san fran , they reject 95% of the diamonds that they recieve therefore the quality is exelent , their classic setting has to be seen and the diamond is really bright .
Tiffany invented the engagement ring by the way . check out their website

1/2 carat set in platnumn cost me $4600 2 years ago by the way

mrs mikeyny loved it .

you get what you pay for so shop carefully

even if you dont get a ring there look around , they have some cool keyrings in sterling silver for around $100

Hey folks,
Thanks for the advice... and well done Tiffany's on inventing the engagement ring :) it added a bit more expense for me... but it's worth it to make the ladies happy.
I have been doing some more research and have decided to buy a loose diamong and let the hopefully future mrs. darraghdog pick out the ring. I have found some good sites ( http://www.diamonddesignco.com/ , and I plan to buy at this shop because of it's proximity : http://www.idasgems.com/diamonds/search.html ). There is also a good forum which I wish I had more time to research - [broken link removed]
Wish me luck !
Darragh.
