Employment Crisis

I have been employed by a company for the last 1.5 years. Over the last 4 months my work load has doubled. Another person has been taken on to assist me, but the sole responsibility lies with me. I have been going into work at 5am and 6am most mornings and working until 5.30pm most evenings as I am very behind with workload.
I was told today that if thats what it took to get the job done then I should be coming in at that time.
I am very proud of always doing a good job and I feel like I am being put under extreme pressure. I dont want to go on sick.
What are my options with regard to social welfare if I quit my job.

Hi Pookie, that sounds like a terrible situation. I'm sorry I don't know much about the welfare system. You could try www.oasis.gov.ie for advice. I just wondered what line of work you're in. Maybe if readers knew they might be able to offer some practical advice.

Yes, it's an appaling situaiton and I suspect it's a very prevalent problem. With the massive unemployment issue, some unscrupulous employers just don't care any more

That's a very simplistic view.
Maybe the OP is just not able to get the work done and needs training or just doesn't have the aptitude.
Maybe their employer is just about staying in business and can't afford the extra cost.
Maybe the OP hasn't communicated their stresses and concerns to their employer sufficiently.

We simply don't have enough information to jump to the simplistic stereotypical view that it's all just down to the evil employers.

Hi Pookie,

IMO your health will be at risk if you continue to work like this in the long term (unless you are like Bill Cullen!). Having said that, any time that I find myself in situations like that, and there have been one or two, I always look back at them and realise that I gained so much experience at that time. So, is there anything you are learning now that can improve your offering to the next employer? If so, it might be worth sticking around until you can get this experience. f not, then perhaps it's time to either have a chat with your employer or find something more suitable elsewhere.

Firefly.

I feel sorry for you but here is another simplistic suggestion - can you actually revisit the workload and drill down to what is critical and what is the stuff that can wait or better still be dropped with little or no kickback? If it is requested you can always resume it but often there are tasks which seem vital and then are just not all that important.
