Is it normal for an employer to make a contribution to an employees pension if the company has a pension scheme?
If so, does anyone know what would be considered an appropriate amount i.e. would they match employee's contribution?

Yes it would be normal. I think about 50% of a contribution is common.

Depends on the industry. I've been in places where the company contributes nothing, which wouldn't be too unusual in the non-multinational-tech companies. I've also been in places where they contribute 2% or 5%, or match your contributions up to 5%.

Matching up to 5% is common. Its at the employers discretion though, they dont have to make a contribution if they dont want to.
