In an article in todays Independent about a Garda who, on his way to court, tragically knocked down and killed a pensioner, it is revealed that Gardai, Ambulance and Fire Service personnel do not NEED to have a license to drive!!!
Apparently this is actually legislated for.
Now, I have a friend in the Ambulance service and he HAD to get a D1 license before he was allowed to drive the ambulance, but that is obviously a practical application of common sense as the law does not require it.
However, I have also heard that drivers of Ambulances are on their own insurance when on duty (not sure how accurate this is but I read it in the local paper after a crash involving an ambulance in Limerick some years back).
