Electricial Products - Which brand is best?

Hi All,

I have a strange question, in a few months time I am moving into a new house and at the moment am looking around at electical products such as americian fridge, hobs, double oven, washing machine etc. I am wondering what brand to go for? I got quoted for some Whirlpool products on the weekend from an electicial store but I really have no idea which products are best and if I should go for all the same brand products?

Any suggestions or comments of other posters experience with products like what is good and what brands to stay clear of would be great?

Miele ( incredibly expensive) are generally regarded as the cats pyjamas!

I completely balked at the price tag though. I have all Zanussi appliances and have had no problems with them at all. I'd be of the view that there is little between the major makes so its question of looks/spec etc.,etc for the price.

I've had Miele appliances for 10 years and no problems. Washing Machine, Tumble Dryer (Condensor), Dish Washer and vaccuum. I have had experiences with Hotpoint and Whirlpool prior to these. My American Fridge freezer is GE with integrated water filter and small opening on door for milk etc. I believe you get what you pay for. I know these appliances are expensive but worth it in the long run.
 
I knew the ex GM of Miele Ireland and seemingly they are the Rolls Royce of the Electrical Goods Market also they are the Rolls Royce price as well. But as he used say You get what you pay for. They seem to last longer than the other brands. Belling for Cookers are another good brand but not what they used be according to a service engineer friend of mine.
 
I don't think its easy to find statistically reliable information about which brands are the best (or last the longest on average).
Often you get what you pay for, often the higher the cost, the higher the quality.

I usually go for the brand with the longest warranty, it takes the risk out of the purchase. 7 years ago, I bought a few Whirlpool appliances with an 8 year parts warranty, nothing went wrong with any of them.
I'm sure if I had bought other brands, nothing would have gone wrong either, but a good warranty is key.
It also helps look at the quality of an item before buying it, open the door, see the quality of the handles and buttons, quality speaks for itself.
 
Bosch is my favourite brand, very very good quality, a little more expensive than the Whirlpools etc but not as expensive as Neff, Miele, De Dietrich etc.
 
Look more at what you want from each machine.
Washing machine - Best to go for front loader with a high spin and of course A rated energy, personally wouldn't go for hotpoint or indesit or beko. Zanussi are strong and you would get a good machine for under €500. Look at miele and you talking about €1200 (three good regular machines for same price). As a middle ground between zanussi and miele I would choose siemens - they have a very good reputation and not overly expensive you could get one around €600. I like Siemens ovens and hobs purely for style but again they will be A rated and good quality. For a dryer you need to know if you are going vented or not as this will change the price. Never liked the American styles purely because i don't think they utilise space and a good larder fridge can look as good and provide the storage you need.
 
It took us months to decide our final list of appliances. The energy rating was an important factor as a higher the rating, the lower the electricity bill. Order the brochures so you can contrast compare features at home and price them up over the web. We went for Bosch oven and mw, De Deitrich for hob and extraction fan. Elextrolux for fridge and d/w. Sellers didn't rate Hotpoint much. Miele and Neff are the best but you'd want to be a professional cook to get the use out of the features.
 
i have always found zanussi the best. over the years they have been the most reliable for me. i broke the door of my dishwasher the other week where the tablets go and i called them. two days later i got a new door system in the post with instructions on how to install it, no charge! so good customer service also.
 
I believe Bosch, Siemens and Neff are all made by the same company. If you just want a basic appliance, e.g. 60cm. fully-integrated dishwasher, just go for the cheapest out of those three, it'll be the same as the others. We found Siemens tend to be the cheapest. At the top end the design will change but the basic structure should be the same.

As far as I know it's the same with Electrolux, Candy and Zanussi (Electrolux group).

Miele are supposed to be ultra-reliable but, IMHO, aren't worth the money. We found we could buy 2.5 Bosch washing machines for the price of the equivalent Miele so, even if it broke and was replaced, we'd still be up on the deal overall.

My only suggestion is not to buy the bottom of the range for any manufacturer - we've had issues with our DeDeitrich oven but the hob, combi and extractor have been fine.

Miele if you have the money otherwise get Bosch, neff siemens bosch are the same only cosmetic differences. and if you can get all 3 at different prices then go for the cheaper one but you may not like neff bosch siemens in the kitchen.

I agree with Miele being the best appliance out there. I have friends who have Neff and who swear by them. I was in a friends house recently and the bought appliances called Gorenje. The came with a 5year parts and labour warranty and looked really good.

I have a top of the range Miele dishwasher which broke down yesterday for the first time. It is exactly eight years old - would have expected it to go ten years, at least, without trouble. On the plus side it is the quietest dishwasher I ever owned.
 
I'm another miele fan. What I like about them is that if there is a problem the machine will let you know before it floods your kitchen/ defrosts your food etc. My Washing machine outlet got bunged up. The machine stopped draining and the alarm went off. The instruction book tells you what to do to fix it for yourself so not only did I save the repair cost I also didn't have a flood. Dishwasher does similar. Lots of different people use my appliances (well trained teenagers included!) so knowing about a problem before it causes a mess is important. Being able to fix a lot of the stuff that goes wrong yourself is also great and their service is brilliant.
 
Just joined today and maybe you're have all the answers you need but just in case. I always look at what is recommended by the Irish Consumer Choice magazine or the English Which.co (already mentioned) and in over 10 years of purchasing household goods haven't had any problems. The best thing about these are the market research is already done, you can find out a lot more about the products you are interested in and what prices to expect. Currently I have a Miele vacuum (fab and not too expensive)Bosch fridge/feezer and Washing Machine. Think the clothes dryer is Zanussi not at home so not sure but its a condensing model and brill.
