Electric lawnmower repairs

At the weekend I very stupidly ran over the lead of the lawn mower!!
I went to one of the big hardware stores who gave me the name of the distribution company for Bosch, I rang them, they said I can get a universal power lead and replace it available in any hardware store..
Problem is everywhere I ask they look at me as if they have never heard of this before.
Someone else suggested just putting the plug on where the lead is cut and using an outside extension lead. Is this safe though??
Any opinions or alternative ideas would be appreciated..

What they mean is to get a standard extension lead and remove the socket end, and use this to replace the lead on the mower. A single long lead would be safer than a couple of shorter ones.
