Hi All,
first post here, i am 28 and i have my leaving certficate and i have a 2 year national certificate in electronic and computer engineering, before i worked in some eletro mechanical repair for a short period and then i worked as an IT destop/network support techican/ workshop repairs for 3 years. i left the country came back and i am now working in the construction industry, but i would really like to start a new career as an electrical lineman as i feel i would be well suited to it.i would really appreciate any feedback from anyone who feels they have any advice they can give me on how to go about getting into this industry etc., at the moment i am in a rut and finding it very hard to find any kind of work, i am living in donegal which kind of does not help either.

Hi Valley.

I don't fully understand what exactly you mean by "electrical lineman". If it is related to ESB type linesmen, then it should be the new ESB Networks you should contact.
Since the ESB split to ESB Networks they gave many of their line labourers the option of training as electricians and to become linesmen. I imagine that there might be an over-supply at present.

However if it is an electrician apprenticeship you are thinking about, I suggest you contact FAS in Sligo, who will outline the process you need to follow. You are well young enough to take it up at 28. There is a far less drop-out rate at that age and employers offering the apprenticeship prefer the maturity.

You must be willing to accept the low wages for the first few years of apprenticeship, but having an appreciative employer will usually lead to top-ups.

Best ofluck.
