EIR TV service.

This was a very good service, particularly when used with the Apple box supplied.
However the BBC recording facility was withdrawn last year.
Now the RTE catch up service has also been withdrawn, presumedly to get us all using their awful player?
On a positive note the Virgin Media recording facility is back working since December.

Apparently Eir have launched a new TV service this week based on an Android box. Most of the recording restrictions are coming from the TV channels so unlikely to be any changes there.

Looks a nice piece of kit, but I'd hesitate to try it out and give back the excellent Apple box?!

It's a downgrade on the Apple box that's for sure and obviously eir are making savings.

I've had EIR TV with the apple TV since mid 2021. Every year I ring, saying I'm going to switch and get a bit off for another 12 months. I even switched to SKY for a month and then switched back.
It really is a good product but I think 90% of that is because it's a good quality Apple TV box. The app itself is ok. I know they've lost catchup on RTE and previously BBC but think that's to do with the channels and outside their control. If you'd an average android box and an average app then you'll get an average product.

One thing that people aren't aware of is you can buy another Apple TV (I got one cheap on DoneDeal) and use it on another TV in the house. You don't have to purchase multiroom like with other suppliers as it checks your internet provider. My guess is I'll be able to download the android TV app on another TV and stream to that TV. Even if you sign up to EIR now and get the Android Box but you already have an Apple TV box I see no reason why it wouldn't work on the that.

That 15 euro a month for 12 months is for the TV only. If you go basic broadband and TV it's €50. I'm paying €60 and happy.

The loss of record isn’t really the channels, it’s the providers selling boxes that don’t have built in record. If they have built in record you are entitled to record and use under the copyright act. Once they are not actually recording but sending you a copy from the cloud etc then it’s not covered by copyright act then broadcasters need the rights for each programme to allow it which is not viable. So the providers have to make a deal to use the channels players and it’s a mess from there

That's not the case, as covered in other threads on here and in the https://www.independent.ie/business/technology/106000-eir-tv-customers-no-longer-able-to-record-bbc (media), the boxes have the capability of recording but the license holders (BBC, etc.) are restricting who can record their content.

It's totally the channels calling the shots as regards cloud recording and a replay tv function. RTE are particularly bad for e.g. won't allow replay function on a lot of shows and you can't skip the ads with a Virgin box. This is RTE and not Virgin in this example. The fact we have no choice to pay a tv licence once we have a tv and then RTE basically 'making it hard' for providers is particularly annoying and should be stopped.
