Folks,
Can anyone tell me of a course that i could do to educate me on Tax matters. I am scared at how ignorant i am considering how much tax i am paying now and will be for the rest of my life.

The Irish Taxation Institute run a one year course called Tax Technician or a 3 year Associate course leading to full qualification as an AITI

I would recommend the technician course as the 3 year associate course is long and painfull

Good luck

Is there any need to do a course? Do you work/want to work in tax? There are several books on tax that would probably deal with the more common issues.

AITI courses are probably more geared to someone who is going to work in tax-however the Tax Technician Course does look like it would give a good grounding in the issues that would affect most of us day-to-day.

For a start make sure that you are claiming any of the common tax credits/reliefs/allowances that apply to your situation.

Common PAYE tax credits and reliefs

Read the threads in this forum and the information on the Revenue and websites. That should be enough. If in doubt get independent, professional advice on your specific situation from a qualified accountant/tax advisor.

Be careful what you read on revenue website it not always correct and sometime not updated for finance acts etc....sometimes £ to € aint done god help us all

Ludermor,

The course might well turn out to be the best time and money you have ever spent. It's easy to read articles on the net, but dealing with revenue staff who themselves do not fully understand tax matters can be a pain. I've queued for hours outside the Dublin office and having eventually spoke with a customer service person the wrong certificate was sent out to me. So three subsequent telephones and two further wrong certificates later!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr might cause me to believe that I'm wrong - but I'm not.
