I got an email from ebay about unauthorised account access.I am wary of opening as after clicking on the link ,the sign in site I was directed to had only address http, not https. How do I know if this is genuine or not.I dont want to get a virus or whatever but also don't want to ignore in case somebody knows my a/c details.thanks

Sounds like a phishing email. It is almost certainly not from Ebay but a random spam email sent out to a bunch of people in the hope that some would log on to the site they have set up. If you do this then they will get your details & password. (If you have Windows without all the security updates the address could even appear to be ebay.com)

If you want to check on your account status go to ebay.com by manually typing in the address yourself (not following the link in the email). If you want to be really sure check that you get the https: and also check the security certificate for the site by double clicking on the padlock icon. If after all this you are still concerned look for a customer service contact form or email address on ebay.com and write to them yourself.

Take a look at ebays info on this for more information.

Definitely phishy. I got a similar one (but to a different e-mail address from the one I use for eBay) warning me that my account was going to expire in the next 24 hours if I didn't click on the link provided...

Forward it to eBay as advised (for what it's worth?)
