Maybe a daft question, but can a blank DVD RW work the same way for burning data back-up as a blank CD RW
except with additional memory (4.7Gb v 700Mb)?

Yup. As long as you're using a DVD+RW capable drive.

Yes - or even 8.5Gb with the new dual layer ones.

This is why I'm getting one - to back up my PC and all my digital photos.

Do you need a Dual Layer DVD drive to use Dual Layer DVD's?

Nope. Most commercially produced DVDs are dual layer. When watching a DVD you might experience a slight (less than a second) pause as the player adjusts to read from the second layer.

Dual layer DVD discs themselves are still quite pricey whatever about the price of [broken link removed].

Yeah - this is why you generally need something like [broken link removed] when copying a commercially recorded DVD so that it will fit onto a 4.7GB single layer DVD+/-R[W].
