The DVD drive is listed in Device Manager - no excalamation marks etc. I have the DVD software installed-CyberLink DVD. CD's play in the drive but it just stalls when you insert a DVD. Any idea?

Extopia could have a point - I didn't think PCs came as standard with DVD drives 7 years ago. You could always take the cover off and see what is written on the drive...
