Bought a block of Dubliner Cheese in the filling station shop and it was priced at €10.85 per Kilo. A few days later bought 2 blocks at Dunne's Stores and it was priced at €12.00 per Kilo.
Checked the dates and found that the Dunne's stuff was a little fresher and decided that the manufacturer had put up the price but felt that €1.15 per Kilo as a percentage of €10.85 was a bit over the inflation rate.
Went to Tesco today and bought some even fresher cheese. It was €10.85 per Kilo.
All these blocks have the same factory applied label but it appears that they put one price on for Dunnes and another (cheaper) one for everyone else.
Can anybody throw any light on this matter. Has anyone got some from another source and can you tell me the price. I can not understand Dunnes stores being so much more expensive than everywhere elso.
 
Presumably Dunnes, or anybody else, can charge whatever they like and whatever punters are prepared to pay? That's the free market for you. Caveat emptor.

Totally agree. Sure do I not get away with a few chances myself. Still have to say that I am surprised at the difference.
I think that it is time to contact them and see what they have to say about it.
 
Do you eat that stuff yourself? I would have assumed that you would consider rennet incompatible with your dietary regime?

I am Raw Vegan married to a non vegan who even sometimes eats meat when I am not looking.
 
I assume that it's a vegetarian rennet used in Dubliner cheese as they use the vegetarian symbol? I emailed them during the week about this but haven't had a response yet.

I assume that you are correct and are safe to use it even if you do not get an answer. Cheese has been off my personal radar screne for many years but even back then I was aware, (when I was vegetarian) that there were only some that I could eat and Dubliner was one of them.
 
Is it by any chance due to fact that you bought different weights/sizes ??

No. This is the "per Kilo" charge. They were all the small blocks.
 
I was in Dunnes Stores Cornelscourt during the week and I thought the prices of most things had risen compared to the last time I was there. For example his majesty will only eat Whiskas. In Tesco a six pack costs circa €4.80 but in Dunnes it was just over €5. I thought the price of fruit and veg was also quite high. I was also quite miffed when I purchased some cholesterol lowering butter spread, handed in a token that I had just been given in the store while on special promotion, then questioned by the cashier "Did you purchase this product". Considering I had only purchased about 10 items I felt that she could have either remembered the purchase, checked the tallyroll or simply believed me.
 
Are you sure you were comparing like with like. I was just in Dunnes Stores in Stephen's Green and it was only €10.85 per kg too. There was one beside it, Dubliner's Vintage Cheese which was €12 per kg. The packaging was very similiar.
 
MB05 is correct - you are mistaking the 'Vintage' version with the regular cheese. Easy mistake to make as the packaging is almost identical
