We were hoping to fly to Naples for a week end May/early June. Looking at the flights last week and with Aer Lingus cost was around 279 return. Went to book today and they have more than doubled to over 500 return. Does anyone know of charter flights to Naples or any other easy way into Naples itself as we have elderly parent coming along so flying into another airport, getting trains, etc. would be quite difficult in the heat for her. Thanks for any help:)

We flew with Monarch a few years back, as part of a package, not sure if they'll do flight only.

I don't think you can book flight only on a charter flight this early - they usually only sell them until a few weeks before the travel date so your choices are either wait until April\May to do this - I think you have a very good chance of getting it but it's a gamble nonetheless, book the 600 flight to Naples, fly via London with BMI or BA for about 250 or fly to Rome with Alitalia, Aer Lingus or the other crowd and get the EuroStar train to Naples - takes over an hour but is great quality.
I know Joe Walsh Tours sell flght only for around 199 when they do finally release them. Sunway do flight only as well.

thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated. Could I ask if you could tell me about the train from Rome to Naples? Is it difficult getting from Da Vinci airport to the rail station? Any info about getting around would be great as the flights to Rome are much better thanks again.:D

best bet is to sign up for aerlingus newsletter which emails you when there "sale is on " you should get naples quite cheap, naples can be a bit dangerous to walk arround , didnt rate it much,as for rome the train goes from da vinci to the center in 25 mins, then u could get a train from there to naples. we left naples and got a bus outside the airport to sorrento 1 hour was much nicer, you can get ferry to capri too and train to pompei.but dont let me put u off though.

Hi Tinkerbell,

In september, I flew to Rome and got the train to Naples, so I can tell you exactly what it's like.

There are two airports in Rome - Campino and Fiumecino (spelling?).
Fiumecino is on the metro line, so there is a train which takes you to the Central Termini train station.
When you walk out of the airport to catch this train, there are lots of booths selling tickets. I think it is about 10E. The trains go every 20 mins or so and the journey lasts 30 mins. The train is very comfortable.

Then when you arrive in the Certral Termini station, you have to walk to a separate part of the train station (about 10 mins down a long platform) to get to the train for naples. There are TV monitors letting you know which platform to go to.

There are many different trains, the best and quickest to get is the EuroStar. The journey takes 2 hrs, and is very comfortable.

I bought my ticktes for the EuroStar before I left (saved having to buy them in Central Termini). The website is .

You said you are travelling with an elderly parent. In theory the journey is not taxing - just the 2 minute walk from airport to train, then 10 minute walk from airport train to naples train.
However give yourself PLENTY of time. I had given myself two hours between the flight arriving and my Naples train. Then my flight was delayed by an hour, and I had to wait at the baggage carousel for 45 mins. I missed my train, and only by running like the wind (panicking trying to find the platform) I just made the next train.

I would say give youself loads of time (at least three hours) to catch your train connections, and find platforms without stressing out or hurrying along your elderly relation.

When we were going to Sorrento from Rome we needed to change trains in Naples and were warned by locals in Rome to be very careful, shootings and robberies seem to be very common.

I didn't see any trouble but we only passed through.....

The Romans are terrified of Napoli. So are the Sorrentines. It's a pretty rough looking place all right.

Be very careful at the train station in Naples- it is probably Italy's most disadvantaged city and crime is rife. Wait until the Aer lingus sales are on and as another poster said sign up for the newsletter and book early for a cheap flight. last year there was a great sale in early Feb so keep an eye on the site around then.
I don't want to terrify you but friends of mine travelled from Rome to Naples this summer on honeymoon and their Sorrento hotel didn't collect them on time from the station. They were told by rail staff to stand with the carabinieri! My friends said it really wasn't safe, they were scared stiff and they live in a particularly well-known (for all the wrong reasons)west Dublin suburb so would be well used to shady characters. Check out tripadvisor and other forums for feedback before you book a train to Naples with an elderly parent.

Yes, check out trip advisor, but I have to say even after hearing these scare stories, I loved Naples.
It has a shabby charm - it feels like a city people actually live in, rather than Florence for example, which is all spruced up for visitors.

The train station is not scary atall - I was there for a few hours on my own, and just got some take-away pizza and read my book, and no one bothered me.
From a safety point of view, I wouldnt have a problem bringing someone elderly there. (Actually I went with my 76 year old mother!).

Has anyone got first hand experience of Napoli being that much worse than many other major cities in Italy? I found it ok, definitely better during the day than at night, bit like Florence but I think an armed military escort might not be necessary. It's not Bogota, Baghdad or Limerick (joking!)
Like ragazza I took the Eurostar and thought it was excellent, oh to have it here - 200kph+, free trolley service, reclining seats...
If you are going on to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento or the Amalfi coast the local train is crap and that train platform is pretty grotty and desolate rather than rough. There is loads of Ultras graffitti around, same as Sorrento and Herculaneum.
If you want to make your parents trip as comfortable as possible then depending on your final destination I would suggest, if direct flight unavailable, the following options

To Sorrento, Pompeii etc.
Eurostar Rome to Napoli
Ferry Napoli to Sorrento or Capri

To Positano, Ravello etc,
Eurostar Rome to Salerno
Ferry Salerno to Positano - train station is across street from ferry, easy!

Having spent several months travelling in Italy - and spending time in Naples its one of those places - love it or hate it! Compared to the rest of Italy its is NOT that great a place - rundown and polluted....Head out on the Amalfi cost and get out of that city! Surrounding areas great..But not Naples! Sorrento is a lovely place to base yourselves if you want to take trips to Pompeii etc, and for your parents its a lot nicer place too. Although to get down to the sea port there its either a bus for them or lots of steps!
A trip over to Ischia or Capri for a day is great - check out the natural spring baths at Ischia!

Flights you are better off keeping a check in the new year for cheap flights - but you are going at peak time so they will be expensive enough!

Getting train from Rome to Naples is great - book your tickets in advance, allow time too.

As for trains they are incredibly reliable in Italy and cheap way to travel -your parents may well really enjoy that too. Allow time from airport to railway station too. Once you get to Napels / Sorrento whichever you choose to do - if you get a local bus buy your tickets in newsagents for the buses - they don't sell them on the bus you have to get them in advance too.

thanks so much everyone for all the info and advise and insights into Naples. Just checked on Aer Lingus and the flights to Naples are back to just under 300 again so think we'll grab the seats just in case they go quickly. Glad we didn't book them at the dearer prices earlier!! We are going to stay in Sorrento for the holiday so that makes things simpler. Appreciate all your help:)
