Last night I stopped off in Dublin city centre to buy 2 books as part of the Christmas present shopping frenzy.

I visited 5 bookshops and priced both books in each shop.

The difference between the lowest total and the highest was €12.46 ! (18.95 + 17.99) vs (14.24 + 11.24).

Maybe Mary Harney has a point ?

Are you comparing like with like? Were the books 'bestsellers'?

I find that for instance Read's are extremely competitive on the very limited number of bestsellers they stock, but that their selection is very small, whereas HF or Waterstone's have a vast selection but may not always be as deeply discounted on certain bestsellers.

Whatever about bestsellers, they were new titles available in all 5 shops.

And yes, Reads was the best value. Excluding them, the difference between lowest and highest was about €7.

And next year Easons will have completed their takeover of Reads so I guess the value they currently offer will no longer be available.

Are Eason's buying Read's?! I absolutely hate Eason's! One more extension of their vice-like grip on the import and distribution of books and magazines in Ireland...
