Lever on Toaster won't remain down when pressed down. Could this be a thermostat problem. Advice appreciated

Thanks in advance.

Hope this doesn't sound silly - do you have it switched on at the mains? Most toasters have a safety feature where the lever won't stay down if the power is off.

It doesn't sound silly and thanks for your quick reply. It is turned on at the mains. We've tried in on different sockets (kettle socket etc) also checked the fuse board and fuse in plug. Still no joy.

Does it have a crumb-tray? There may be crumbs blocking the lever. Empty the tray and give teh toaster a good shake.

We tried everything, the crumb tray was cleaned, the fuses were checked and when the lever was held down it didn't heat. There were special "castle" shaped screws on the underside and when it was possible to remove them - standard screwdrivers wouldn't do the job, there were computer chips in it!!!!!!. The toaster was consigned to bin...problem solved. Guess trying to check out which chip was faulty etc just didn't seem to be worth the effort.

Thanks for the replies.

I cleaned the crumb tray, as per one suggestion...and it needed it. LOL. Thank you. Then I checked our switch box, as per another suggestion that the toaster wasn't getting power. I found a kitchen switch was tripped and so I reset it...after that the toaster got power...and the handle stayed down, Thanks to all of you for your help.
