Rang esb but they coudnt tell me how their meters are wired so wondering does an electrician have to wire extra cables to meter box for either meter to work. Want damage kept to minimum and getting storage heaters in.

Great isn't it.

For dual tariff you need a control cable which carries the signal from the ESB time switch to your storage heating contactor. This is usually a 1.5sqmm twin brown/brown.

If you go for a separate storage heating meter than you need a power cable as well as the control cable, probably a 16sqmm twin and earth.

was planning on getting one of those meters that offer cheap rates for everything at night inc storage heaters do i still need extra cables for that. would they not just switch over at meter, just guessing?

That's the dual tariff meter.
The control cable is an ESB requirement according to their own Code of Practice, but these days who can say?
You could always try it without, then if they won't fit the meter without control wiring, put it in.
