Drywall Repair - Which Filler?

Hi,

I have fixed a hole in the wall (using new drywall piece cut to size, installed batons behind which I fixed the new drywall to). I have put mesh tape around the seams.

My question is can I use pollyfilla to cover the patch? I read about joint compound (American youtube videos) but there are so many options, ready mixed plaster etc. The problem with this stuff is that it goes off apparently so I would be left with a load of it. Would I be OK using pollyfilla?

How big is the gap you are looking to fill (roughly)?

Hi There

Its about 15cm by 15cm. I should add that the piece of drywall I put in is almost flush with the wall. I cant upload a picture but at the moment it looks like this (with the mesh tape around the sides)

I read about joint compound (American youtube videos)

Joint compound shrinks so if you use it then make sure you fill it proud of the hole and then sand it flush when it dries. I did a job on one of my rooms and I found that joint compound was good for infilling indentations, blemishes, cracks and uneven spots in the drywall. But for holes I used a filler (Tout Pret I think the brand was).

Ok, so this is from a DIY-er view point.

I think you'll get away with using two part filler; you only mix as much as you need so there's less waste.

Did you sand back the good side of the seams before applying the joint tape? If not you will end up with a bump of a couple of mm to cover the tape.
