Dry cleaning damage

I took my long fake fur coat in for dry cleaning in December of last year (2011). I had taken my coat to the same dry cleaners on previous years and there had been no problems, but on this last occasion I found that the top clasp had been broken, yet I had not been informed of this when I went to collect my coat.

When I was back home I checked my coat & found the clasp to be missing so took my coat back the same day to the dry cleaners. At first they tried to put the onus on me to say it was broken before I left my coat with them but I explained I would not be walking around with my chest exposed to the cold temperatures if indeed it had been a fault on my part. The dry cleaners had a look in their machine to look for the broken clasp, as it couldn't be found it was their way of saying they had not been negligent. A gesture of goodwill was made and a new clasp was sewn onto the outside of my coat.

Over the weekend the clasp which the dry cleaners fitted has become weakened due to the weight of my coat and is almost broken. Today I sought advice from another dry cleaners who advised that I could buy a new clasp like my original ones from a department store that can be embedded in my coat to support the weight. They have offered to fit the more suitable clasp for £2, I do not know how much the new clasp will be but it sounded expensive from what the second dry cleaner said.

Do I have a case where I can get another dry cleaners to repair/replace the clasp and then get the original dry cleaners to compensate me by paying for the repair or can I get the dry cleaners to source the new clasp themselves and then re-fit the clasp for free? I am a bit concerned about being fobbed off and them not taking responsibility for the damage they caused and the subsequent inadequate repair.

Sounds like you are UK-based. This is an Irish site and we probably don't have sufficient expertise in UK consumer laws to help you, subject to correction of course.
