CHILD SAFETY
Safety belts are designed primarily for adults. Smaller children - up to about 36 kg weight - are safer when restrained in "approved child restraints" which are specifically designed for their size and weight.
Children under 4 years of age must not be allowed in the front seat unless they are using a suitable child restraint. Children under 4 years of age in rear seats must also use a suitable child restraint if one is available. In the absence of child restraints a child in a rear seat may use / a safety belt.
The driver is legally responsible for ensuring that any child under 17 years complies with the requirement to wear a safety belt or child restraint. Small infants - even new-born babies - can use a suitable child restraint and must not use a front seat without one.
Sitting on an adult's lap does not provide sufficient protection and would not meet the requirements of the Regulations. Unrestrained children in the rear should, if possible, be seated directly behind the front seats, which in an accident, may provide some degree of protection from being ejected or from striking hard or sharp objects within the vehicle.
