Driving holiday north Italy

Hi all,
Planning a driving holiday around northern italy for the week beginning 26th september. No definite plans yet just location.
any advice regarding places to visit, hotels to stay in etc?
things must see/do ??

Lago Di Garda and Verona are a must. They are both between Milan and Venice and within about 30 miles of each other. You can then head to Venice for a quick look and head south to Florence (Firenze) thru Bologne. Than across to Pisa and up to Genoa and then back thru Monte Carlo ... ooops getting carried away.

Did you stay in Verona and/or Venice?

Could you rec. somewhere to stay- reasonable and convenient to sights?

Lago di Como is beautiful, the town of Como is right on the lake also you should visit Bellagio a small town further up the lake (the bellagio hotel with all the famous paintings in Vegas is named after this little italian town). The sites and views here are spectacular. The Italian side of Lago Maggiore has loads of small italian towns scattered along its banks for example Stresa, Ispra. All of these towns have lovely restaurants for lunches and dinners and be sure and try the ice cream.

If you do go Verona, Venice direction be sure and stop in Mantua a beautiful little italian town often over looked but well worth a visit.

Just back from Venice, it is definitely a must visit place. We stayed in Dorsoduro, near Piazza le Roma where you park the car, and it was quieter and less hectic than some of the main tourist spots. Still only a few mins walk/boat ride from the main attractions though.

I would definitely warn about eating out etc...be aware of prices before you sit down somewhere, some shameless rip offs about, but also good value to be had if you go around the less touristy spots.

I visitied Venice (one day) during the summer and the one thing I noticed was the the tourists that were staying in venice had to drag their luggage thro' the narrow streets and up&down the narrow bridges - a lot of hassel in high season, not sure about later on in the year.
