Drilling through exterior wall in a wood framed house

Hi, I'm fitting a new extractor fan in my kitchen above the hob. I want to vent through the wall to the outside. As the house is a wood framed house I've been told that, by drilling through the wall, I might damage the damp proof membrane between the interior and exterior walls. I'm sure I'm not the first person to ever attempt this but I am concerned about causing dampness in the future. Any advice?

there will be a membrane attached to the timber frame so you need to carefully remove the brick outer leaf and cut the membrane to the size of the extractor outlet. if you properly reseal the joint between the outlet and the membrane AND make good around the brickwork, you shouldn't have any problem.

the bricks are your first defence! the membrane is only a backup!
