Drainage in planter boxes

Hi,

We are looking at updating our garden by installing a patio with planter boxes built in (made of stone). In terms of the planter boxes, should the bottom have contact with actual soil as opposed to the patio?

If i put drainage holes at the bottem of the planter boxes would the dirty water just spill on to the new patio? I have attached a similar set although mine will not have any lawn, all will be patio.

I guess my question is should the planters be built first and then the patio butted up to the planter box.

Thanks

Yes that's how I would prefer to do it, build the planters first or even just leave room for them and then the roots of the plants can go right down through the soil underneath them, better for the plants, less watering for you and as you say no dirty water drain off on to your nice patio!

Usually the planters would be done along with the base for the paving. Where the planters are to go, openings should be left to allow the planters drain into the ground below.
