Download v Upload speeds

Hi

I am uploading a file(www.yousendit.com) and wanted to check my speed

Downloaded a program called DuMeter and it came up

DL fluctuates between 0.2 kB/Sec to 8.3

UL 16.5 ti 8.2 to 4.36

both sporadic

Is my connection up to scratch or should I get in touch with my ISP who are Utv Internet, think the speed is 512

The file is about 100mb and its taken ages

You don't specify the units of all of the download/upload measurements above - are they KBps (kilobytes per second i.e. units of 1024 bytes per second)? For a broadband connection of [broken link removed] (presumably nominal rating of 512Kbps download/256 Kbps upload where Kbps is kilobits per second) a download speed of c. 40-50KB would be more reasonable. Of course it also depends on the contention ratio for your line (i.e. the number of users sharing the one "pipe").
