Anyone know of a good website for downloading TV programs onto your PC that you can then save onto disk to watch later????

ok I have an avi file and i want to burn it to dvd still just as an avi file to play in a divx dvd player. Can i just use Windows Media Player 11?

Probably. You can certainly use Nero or whatever DVD burning software you prefer to just burn the AVI to a DVD. It should play on a DIVX DVD Player but won't play on a DVD Player that is not DIVX-certified.

Just burn it as you would burn any other file. IE-drag and drop into the list of files to be burned. I use nero or sometimes Intervideo diskmaster, wouldn't trust WinMediaPlayer
the divx player automatically scans the disk for such files.

EDIT: Basically what MonsieurBond said

I have a DVD recorder rigged up to my PC monitor - which also doubles as a TV. Last week I purchased DIVX converter etc. by download. When I try to drag a file from my CD/DVD drive into the converter I am told that DIVX does not read unsupported files. I went to the support site and was told to download some free software called Avisnyth to change the file extension. At this stage I am lost. Can anyone help. Please bear in mind I am a novice at this endeavour.
I have a DVD in another room which is DIVX enabled.

First of all, never drag a video from a cdrom drive to a video editor software.
It's better to have it on you HDD.
Second: If the file you're trying to drag in for editing is ending with ".avi" that means it's not nesessarily a divx file. It could be XViD, and divx doesnt support an Xvid file. (XViD is bassically the same as DiVX eccept it's freeware, divx is not) I tend to avoid downloading DiVX movies when i can, i always go for MKV or XViD-AVI.
3rd: I use avisynth along with VirtualDub, and it's excellent, but i don't see how it would be used to change a filetype, i thought it's solely for creating a movie file. So at this time i am confused!!

I'm sorry to hear that you're novice, as you will find it hard to get hep from ppl in because it takes ages to help n00bs
Your best bet is to google avisynth and read up on it. Most ppl don't have time and/or just ignore learners cause as i said it takes ages to explain to lay ppl.

Thanks -will try Windows media player again and see how I get on. Dont want to pay for Nero.

Thanks a million Sn@kebite. I'll follow your advice as far as possible I have loads of time to do so. Otherwise I think I'll claim my money back from DIVX. Your reply was much appreciated. Billy

If you're one of these "no illegal software on my pc at all times" noble freaks..LoL You can try these:

Nero Lite Trial 33MB

or

Nero 7 - Premium Trial 109MB

Think they're both 30 day trials. You would be better off D/Ling the 1st one (33MB) it's fine for burning files to disc. The other ones is just for more advanced users/features.
