double oven wiring question

Hi

I recently had a new kitchen installed - I got an electrician in to install the double oven - he wired the double oven up to a 13amp plug - basically the first time I used both ovens it blew the fuse on the plug off the oven. I called him up and he is adamant that the setup is fine but that the mains board is overloaded and is going to come back to look at this.

At the time I suggest it should be hardwired directly off the mains but he said no this isn't required. (I have never seen an oven or hob that didnt have an off switch hard wired)

I checked on the esb website and their guide suggests that anything over 3.6kw should be on its own circuit - this oven is 5.5kw.

for the overall kitchen upgrade - there was a "project manager" organising all the tradesmen - when the fuse blew I got a call out under the warranty and he said this was a fire hazard and completely against electricians guideslines - as the electrician is adamant is doesnt need to be hard wired and is suggesting doing something off the main board.

Is there a process for reporting such "dubious" work to and get some form of arbitration on this or is this a naive expectation?

I'm reluctant to let him at it again but I paid over 500 euros for this an other electrical work carried out by him such as moving sockets etc.

I also assume if there was a fire due this faulty work the insurance would be null and void?

thanks.

Not a hope in hell of a load of 5.5KW working on a 13Amp fuse.

Its pulling roughly 25Amps !

It needs a 30 Amp cooker supply wired from a separate circuit breaker with at least 6mm wires.

I suspect your electrician isn't an electrician. What role was your "project manager" supposed to fulfil - check references / qualifications for trades, sign-off 1st & 2nd fix work?

have to agree with mathepac, having a pliers, phase tester and some tape, doesent an electrician make! he was no electrician

+1

Being pedantic.....I'm sure HighFlier meant 6 sq mm cable.............

I don't think 6mm wires woud reach from your fuse board to your cooker isolater.

its against regs to have a oven on a plug. it needs a cut off hence the big reg switch for cooker in kitchens. similar to elec shower, has cut off cord. dont let him near your house again

Have to disagree S.Carpenter, there are many ovens that can be used with a 13 amp plug top, eg. Microwave oven, Microwave/Combi oven, Table Top oven, Rotisserie Oven, Single slot in oven up to 3KW.....etc.

Indeed all the above are sold with 13 Amp plug top fitted.

The wiring rules don't specifically mention oven, but rather applicance ratings. Most double ovens are heavy load applicance and do need to be wired directly in the same way as immersion heaters. To be certain, check the load label on the oven, (or in the oven user manual). If the load is more than 13 amps ( or about 3kW) - a typical double over is rated at about 5.5kW - then it certainly should not be hanging off a single 13A plugtop. RECI (Register of Electrical Contractors Ireland) would be a good place to complain.

single ovens yes but Ive fitted hundreds possibly close to thousands of kitchens but Ive NEVER seen a double oven connected with a 13amp fuse and that is what the OP is asking about

Which is what I answered in the very first reply in this thread!

I don't think I either inferred nor suggested, in any of my replies, that a double oven should be on a 13A plugtop.

Indeed my answer, which you quoted, was directed to S.Carpenter when he said
S.Carpenter said:
