Hi all, not sure if anyone can help but here goes. We installed a stira type attic stairs we got in B&Q about 18months ago. Recently the little thing you pull down to release the door catch broke, at the time we were able to jimmy the door open and tie some string around the latch so we could pull it open. Since then, however, the door has been shut and locking mechanism must be fully closed or something as we cannot seem to get it open anymore so door is well and truly jammed. I know this is probably a long shot but does anyone have any advice on what I could do? Any ideas welcome. Thanks

Hi
I cant see any "non destructive" method of getting it open so maybe if you drilled a 10mm hole through the door near the latch and then cut a small hole with a jigsaw making sure you missed the ladders on the other side of the hatch. Maybe you could work it open from the inside then and then screw a patch over the hole etc etc.

If that doesnt work then cut around the latch and replace the door.

It might be better cut around the frame at the latch. It will be easier repair this than the door.

Just screw in a reasonably sized screw, grab hold of it and pull. Then fill the hole with filler afterwards.

Would you need a tenon saw for that Leo?

We back to the right for the job? :D

Just in case we're not, if you can't get the door open, a combination of drill and chisel (one at a time mind) might be best to get at the catch.
