I post this here in case anyone else has had a difficulty with a patio door and been faced with a heft replacement bill.

Our rear patio door had been a problem since we moved into our house in 2002.
Its quite a heavy metal door with 6mm double glazing and we found it hard to move.
Recently the guide rail came out of its groove and the door became impossible to close.

We searched around for quotations for a replacement.
The cheapest was a ball-parkfigure of around €1500.
The highest quotation we obtained was €2700.
We couldn't afford this expense.

A mate and I lifted the door out and inspected it.
Problem was exposed as the door not being supported by the trolleys beneath it.
The result was the guide had worn a groove in the lower frame of the door.
That's why the door had become so incredibly hard to operate over time.
We refurbished the guide, re-set it in the groove, re-installed the door.

We cast around for an alternative and we found Dennis and Terry - the Door Doctors.
They came out this morning, replaced the old guide, which was broken, and the trolleys.
The trolleys now sport two non-ferrous sets of wheels wheels as opposed to one set each.

The refurbished door is a revelation - literally one finger operation.
There was no hard sell or waffle from the two guys, who started their firm doing windows.
They warned us that there could be some settling of the setup and to call us if anything went wrong.

Given that this is only installed and these guys have no track record I cannot actually offer a recommendation.
However their honesty, professionalism and competence impressed me - and I'm not easily impressed.

The cost of the work was €260 including parts and labour.
They were hear for over two hours doing the work.

I have no connection to their firm other than being a satisfied customer.
I offered to post this here - they didn't even ask for a referral.
