at the weekend a friends dog decided to deposit a large amount of pee on our carpet, and it stinks.
we used vanish carpet cleaner as soon as the mess was spotted but still, some days later, it still stinks.

any dog / carpet owners out there with any tricks?

Not sure if it would help but Fabreeze worked for me before (on fabric couches rather than carpet - but presume it should work). Spray lots of it on it and should get rid of the smell.

mix biological washing powder with some water to make a paste, rub into the area and rinse with clean water. should do the trick. try this out on a hidden piece of carpet first to insure it doesn't effect the colour.

A tip I got for dealing with cat donations (which are even stinkier than dog's):

mix bicarbonate of soda with an equal volume of cornflour, add some essential oil - about half a teaspoonful for a cup of the mixture - and mix thoroughly (yes, the mixture will be dry. It's not a mistake). Work the mix into the affected area thoroughly, leave overnight, and vacuum up the following day.

Worked wonders on a very pongy piece of carpet. Good luck!
