Dog has Canker

Hi, my dog has developed Canker from when he was teething (Eating tree bark) my Vet is telling me there is no cure. The poor devil is grand some days and very bad others. I am considering putting him down (reluctantly) to put him out of his misery. Anyone had a similar problem. Should I get a second opinion or anyone heard of a cure.

I didnt think that canker would warrent a dog being put down. I had a dog with this before now its a few years ago, he had it in one ear only but it was treatable the vet gave me a syrenge to be administered a couple of times a day and I was told to keep his ears clean i.e. make sure there are no hair in them etc This is a thing that dogs with long ears are prone too.

I am only considering putting him down as he appears to be in great distress some days (maybe its weather releated) he whinges alot and rubs his ears on the bad days.
