Does marriage wipe out gift tax?

If two individuals are in a non marital relationship, and if one lent a sizeable amount of money to the other to buy an appartment),.............. if they subsequently got married could the lender write off the loan as a gift and would the borrower face any Gift tax if the gift was made after the date of marriage?

Provided the money given was originally a loan and the write off didn't happen until after the marriage, there would be no gift tax on the write off.

The value of the interest saved on the loan (presuming it was interest free) would be an annual gift prior to the marriage but if this is less than €3k p.a. would not be taxable and would not use up any of the person's tax free threshold.

Thanks guys, now if only I can get my bank manager to agree to marry me
;-)
