Does being a parent affect Mature Student grant?

A friend's income is above the threshhold for receiving a mature student grant. Will the VEC take into a account that my friend is a parent and entitled to lone-parent tax credit (although not the main carer of the child)

Really appreciate any help!

Thankyou! That had just the information I was looking for. Everything else I read sounded like it was only siblings of the student who counted (as children of the candidates parents) Couldn't figure out the situation for candidate who was a parent but that pdf clarified it!

Thanks again!

Hi SillyBilly, I am also appying for a grant for a post grad course, and I cant find the Threshold amount anywhere for receiving a grant. Do you know where I would give this figure?

thanks

Strong1: The maintenance grant does not apply to post-grad courses.

Maintenance grants are not paid in respect of attendance at part-time and evening courses. However tax relief at the standard rate of tax is available for tuition fees paid by students attending part-time courses approved for tax relief. Tax relief is also available on approved full-time and part-time postgraduate study. Further information on tax relief is available from your local tax office.

Hi rapid,

I rang my local county council and asked them could I apply for a grant for a post-grad course I'm doing. They said I could.

Maybe your referring to a different grant? I have a few mates who did post-grad courses and all got grants.

Are you sure about this?

Hi Strong1: I stand corrected! For full-time post-grad courses, you can indeed apply for the maintenance grant through your local county council (provided that the course is not in a private college). This can cover the the cost of the course itself, as well as financial payments direct to the student.

If the post-grad course is part-time however, you are not eligible for the maintenance grant.

Phew! For a sec there I thought I would be facing into a years scriping and saving to get through the course, not that that would stop me but the grant will ease the burden a fair bit!

cheers for clarifying that rapid!
