Do you remember the first house you bought?

TCD and daft.ie are doing some research into historic house prices.

This survey asks you a few short questions about property market transactions you have undertaken. If you have only ever bought one property, it should take approximately 3 minutes to complete.

Together with researchers at the Department of Economics at Trinity College, Dublin, we at Daft.ie are trying to build a better understanding of the Irish property market. This Housing Market Memory Project aims to fill in some of the blanks that exist about the Irish housing market, particularly before 1996.

The survey asks specific information on purchase and sale prices, as when this is known for the same property, even small amounts of information can be used to generate very accurate trends in prices over time and between markets. Similarly, mortgage amounts mean the effect of credit in the housing market can be understood.

As with all academic research, any information given will be treated in the strictest confidence. No individual results will be disclosed, merely aggregate results. If you would like a copy of the research results, please leave your email in the box provided. Thank you in advance for your response.

You can complete the survey here

Very interesting, thanks for the info Brendan.

Look forward to seeing the results in due course.

Just tried to do that survey. Couldn't exit from it - after I said I'd no more property purchases, it kept bringing me back to the same screen wanting info on the next purchase. Where's that 12-year old programmer?

Hi Eithneangela,
I've checked through the responses there and can't find any entry that would match the issue you describe. It may have been just a glitch or it may have been an issue with your browser or internet connection.

Thanks for trying to complete it though, and thanks to all those who are filling it out. Every response helps.

I had a quick look last night, and will go back later once I've double-checked dates etc.

One observation - apparently it's not considered possible to have purchased a house with no bathroom. How very Celtic Tiger of you! ;-)

We built our house in 1974 but the survey only seems to be for purchased houses.

I noticed that also. Neither was there an option to select "mobile home/caravan in a corner of the field" as selfbuild was in the "good" old days. Maybe they're not interested in self builds and site values?

@Mystic_Oil
Good point re the bathroom! For those with no bathroom originally, if you choose "One bathroom" and then note in the comment for improvements that this was added rather than there originally (if that's the case).

@Annie51
Thanks for highlighting this - the focus is indeed on transactions, rather than self-builds but if you would still like to fill it out, you can enter cost price instead of purchase price, as long as you note in the comment box that this was a self-build, rather than a transaction.

Thanks again one and all.
