Does anyone know whats behind Aldi's policy of trying to encourage customers not to take a receipt?

On the back of their receipts it clearly states that every item in the store is covered by their 60 day no quibble guarantee if you have the receipt so it's a very important piece of paper.


It's hardly just for the saving on printer ink and paper!

I've never had that experience in Aldi. The receipt is always offered and I accept. But a lot of other shops and cafes make me feel I'm being awkward if I ask for a receipt, as it frequently isn't offered.
 
If you have the lidl plus app you get a digital receipt, perhaps Aldi have similar?
 
Most times I've been in Aldi they ask "would you like your receipt?" but I've never noticed them discouraging customers from taking one or any issue if I said "yes, please".
 
My local Aldi now has mainly self-service tills which automatically dispense a receipt. Often there is no till open with an operator. There is a large bin behind the self-service tills that is brimming with unwanted receipts (total waste of paper).
I normally don't want a receipt - most of my trips to Aldi are for a few small items. I would normally only request a receipt if I purchase a middle aisle item.
 
I always take the receipt and ask if not offered but in general it wouldn't bother me for groceries but if I have any househeld/electrical etc type item I find they nearly always give the receipt without prompting and if they didn't I'd definitely ask for it. I presume it's all less waste paper sort of incentive.
 
My local Lidl has a similar arrangement with self service tills but you need the receipt in order to scan the barcode on it to get through the automatic gate leading to the exit.
 
Below is a copy of an ALDI receipt from 15/01/25, the date as printed on the receipt. The photographed copy is substantially more legible than the hard copy as I did some magic in-camera, as distinct from in camera, enhancements The receipt wasn't buried under a heap of groceries, it was on the top of all that stuff and went into the magic receipts envelope on returning home.

The original is very difficult to read. When asked at the checkout if I want a receipt I usually respond by saying "Just put it in the bag, please". If they're this bad as a rule, I'll have to inspect them in the shop before leaving and request a re-print, if that's even possible.

Do the LIDL Plus receipts give the same level of detail as the printed ones? It may be handier to collect digital receipts if they do.

That's pretty poor from an ALDI customer service perspective if receipts are required for after-sales service.

LIDL also ask if you want a receipt - Somebody has probably done the sums on what it costs them each year on printing paper receipts/ environmental costs and there is probably a cost saving to the company over 1000's of stores.
 
I was in Aldi last night, cashier asked me if I wanted a receipt. I didn't but he in no way was discouraging me and it was the exact same question I'd get asked in most retailers
 
Receipt isn't necessary for consumer protection. It may be store policy but proof of purchase is only required for consumer protection.

In reality, a receipt is usually the best form of purchase proof. But it's not the only one.
 
It is very important to take your receipt as the price on the shelf isn't always the same as on the receipt. It has happened in almost all stores at some point. And if when you check your receipt when you get home and find a problem you can go back , when it suits you , with the receipt and get your money back.....without any problem.
 
I honestly can say that on more than a few occasions and generally that when I say, 'yes please'
the tone of the conversation and the demeanor of the sales assistant changes, to me being treated with distain and actually ignored completely and left standing there on one occasion.
