Do you have to return a capital loss to carry it forward?

As with many people in the current climate I have lost money on shares in the last 12 months or so. Up until then I had always returned gains on my CGT return twice annually (and also on Form 11).

I am aware that the losses made on the shares sold can be carried forward and offset against furure gains. However in order to carry losses forward do you need to return them on a CGT return in the year in which they occur?

ie: sell 2 shares, one at a gain of €1000 and the other at a loss of €2000, I would do no return to the revenue and carry a €1000 forward (on my own files). However do I also need to retrun something to the Revnue?

When you return Form 11, you can put the details of the loss in there.
On the Capital Gains page there is space for losses incurred in current year and losses brought forward.
