Do rechargable batteries wear out

I have a problem and am not sure yet if it is the rechargable batteries or the digital camera itself. I charged the batteries a few days ago, and tested the camera by turning it on then. It worked. Now a few days later after no use the camera is dead. I cannot charge the batteries until tomorrow again - but wonder in the meantime if the camera is broken ?

N.B. The batteries may have been charged dozens and dozens of times for different appliances over the past few years.

Yes - rechargeables do eventually "wear out" and fail to recharge. Taking specific steps to care for them can maximise overall lifetime.
