i crashed my car. nobody else was involved. Do I nned to report to to the Gardai before the Insurance Company would process my cliam?

Dunno - the policy should say it if you do. I had my windscreen smashed outside the house and just called the insurer and they sent someone out - they didn't mention having to call the police. But a crash situation may be different... Why not just call insurers and ask? Then, if you do need to report, you can do so and then call insurers back.

the insurers / broker isnt open at the weekend . if i leave it untill monday to report it, after checking with the insurer, would it have an effect on my claim that i didnt report it the day it happened?

Why not report it, just in case. I have had a couple of accidents (wasn't the cause), each time I called them to the scene, but the Insurance Company never went looking for accident reports etc. I think the terms of my policy say I should call them, but not sure if not calling/notifying them would affect a claim.

no, mine only has a 24 hour motor assist line if you need to get towed. i think i might just report it, i cant see what harm it could do and at least it is done if the insurance company do want it done

You're dead right so - better safe than sorry. At least you're ok (or at least the typing fingers still work!)

i went and reported it, didnt see what harm it would do.
the guard was very nice, just took details and said it was done if the insurance company asked about it but it wasnt likely they would. There is just something in the back of my mind that Insurance companies ask on the form if you have reported it. i could be totally wrong.

In relation to awkward questions as to how it happened, i wasnt worried about that as you cant get done for dangerous driving if there are no witnesses, as far as i know.

i was going too fast for a bad bend in terrible road conditions
(torrential rain after a long dry spell) definately a wake up call for me for getting complacent as i have been driving a long time without anything like this happening. If I had met a car coming the other way, there is no doubt i would have hit them and although i didnt hit the ditch very hard, i thought for a second i was going to tumble the car, so all things considered, i was very lucky.

i hope it has the effect that i drive more carefully, dont loose consentration and be more considerate of other road users....at least for a few days!
