Do any women play poker?

Funny - I was just reading [broken link removed] recently which might be of interest.

Yep, love poker!

Worked in the Sun City Casino in Southern Africa for 3 years and got the bug.

Hi

Yes, I've seen a number of women (to be fair, probably not more than 25% of a room) at various poker nights etc.

I've also seen women posting on the poker forums on Rpoints & board.ie I'm sure. :)

Cheers

Thanks for the replies. I learned to play on hols ... my brother in law is a poker nut. I really enjoyed the game ... not so much for the money ... but the fun involved. I am thinking about organising a poker night for some of my friends ... as a change from going out to dinner/pub/cinema. My parents said as children their family always played cards socially ... and always had great fun doing it.

I'm hoping to learn how to play poker very soon but I've recently become addicted to Blackjack!

Yeah I love poker too! I only play it really at Christmas when everyone is around, but I really enjoy it.
There's also Blackjack on the TodayFM website, it's pretty good (and free) and if you get over €20,000 you get entered into a draw.

Pricilla,

Where on the today fm website can I find Blackjack? I can't find it and neither can the search facility on the site!

Ignore the last message, I found it but unfortunately can't play as I can't download anything onto this computer.

Played it socially a few times but would be afraid to play it for real money in case i didn't know when to fold and give up!

This is the same reason I avoid betting of any kind (except the lotto if that counts).

Do people who play it regularly give themselves a limit at the beginning of the night that they won't go over? Just curious as to how people manage not to bet too much?

Fobs, I didn't know you were a girl ;)
Well what we do is throw in €10 or €20 each at the beginning of the game, then use chips or matches. Give an equal amount to everyone and you can do what you like with them, there is no money involved at all, everyone is equal and winner takes the pot at the end.

I have been playing poker every fortnight for the past 7-8 years with the same group of friends. We move around to a different house every time. It's an enjoyable social occasion. Game starts about 9.30 pm. Host has to provide food for the break (10.30ish)and you supply your own drink.

Rules have been changed and adapted over time. We started off with photocopied paper money and and are now playing with real chips. The game is dealers choice between draw poker, 7 card stud, Omaha and Southern Cross.

Its E10 in for 1,000 in chips. You may buyback in once for E5 for 500 chips provided you go below 200. If you lose that well thats too bad. It limits your losses on any night to E15, which means that the game and the losses never gets really serious.

(We had one very strange and unforgettable night (7 playing) when we had a poker of aces against a royal flush in a game of Omaha. On the same night we had another royal flush and in another game a straight flush to the queen)

At the end of the night you take back E1 for every 150 in chips you have and the person with the most chips takes home the rest. This makes the winner take home a bigger portion of the pot than if he were to only be paid E1 for ech 100. At the start of the night Host calls what time the last round of hands is to be played at (important if there is work in the morning).

It's great to win, but it's not the money that's important, it's the buzz.

Long may it last
