Disabling mousepad on Laptop

Hi could anybody tell me how to disable mousepad on Laptop, it's driving me mad when I'm typing, I keep rubbing off it and my typing ends up all over the place.. I'm running Vista on a Dell inspiron 1721. Thanks

The (often a Synaptics touchpad) driver should include a little control panel applet that allows you to tweak the settings such as disabling it while typing etc.
