My husband had an accident at work last Jan and damaged his knee. He has just had a medical by the social welfare doctor, who has decided that he is ok to go back to another type of work! So they are stopping his illness benefit. We had applied for disablement benefit, but know dont know if he will get that or what is the procedure for getting that? Did the SW doc assess him for that at the same time?Hope someone has the info Thanks

If the Doctor says he is fit to go back to another type of work he can apply for Jobseekers Benefit while he is seeking the "other type of work" and awaiting the outcome of the Disablement application.

Disablement Benefit is based on the degree of disablement as a result of Injury at work so I assume it would be a seperate medical examination (not sure)

Thanks for that Black Sheep, Just seems silly to have to claim jobseekers when there is few if any jobs that he could do at the moment.

got a letter from sw yesterday and apparently all assessed at same medical. He was classed as 3% disabled even though he walks permantly with a limp, climbs stairs with difficulty and cant kneel down. Has anyone had any other exp with these assessments?

Biddy, my mam was examined by a SW welfare office doctor because she was out sick from work. There are a number of those benefits so no sure what one she was on. She was on the one that was to last for a year, but after that it was necessary to move to the longer term one. It was then she was examined by SW Doctor. She had to make a number of appeals, three times, I think, before she was granted her claim.

There was substantially more benefits attached to the longer term one, ie three in one allowance, extra week at Christmas. If she were to stay on the shorter term allowance, she would not have got these. I dont think it was disability allowance she was going for, might have been invalidity?
