Disability and carers allowance

I have applied for disability allowance and included my wife as a dependent. As I had a stroke, and my wife has given up work to look after me. Is she entitled to apply for the carers allowance, and if so how will that effect, my disability allowance

Hi Jeon...

Always apply... You've nothing to lose...

If your wife qualifies for Full Rate Carer's Allowance, you will lose the Dependant Relative componant of your Disability Allowance...

However, as the Dependant Relative part of you Disability Allowance is just €135.60 pw, and the Carer's Allowance is €2250.50pw, as a couple you'll still be better off by €84.90pw... And of course she'll have free travel in her own right too...

I think the usual advice of 'If in doubt, apply' is very good advice....

What's the worst that can happen.. All they can do is say 'No'... And there's every chance that they'll say 'Yes'...
